Which knife to choose

Let’s clarify right away – there is no universal knife “for all occasions”. They are used not only for cooking or cutting trophies on the hunt. The range of applications is much wider: for survival, arranging a forest camp, cutting trees on a hike, for self-defense, throwing, everyday wear in the city, and finally – a gift knife “for collection” to a loved one or a loved one.

And for each task, their knives were created, so to speak, “sharpened” for their solution. The comfort, duration, and quality of your work, its safety depends on the best selection of tools. This is directly affected by the characteristics of the blade (first of all, its shape, thickness, sharpening angle), steel parameters (hardness, ductility), geometry and material of the handle, general ergonomics, and weight distribution of the knife.

There are many types of knives, for each of them, you can find both the optimal task, with which he will cope with 5 points, and the work that he will not do at all.

For example, with a serious survival knife or a cleaver, of course, you can try to remove the skin from a deer – but it will take longer to work, and you can’t do without damage to it, and the final result is unpredictable.

It is wiser to take a skinner – a small sharp knife with a large angle of convergence of the tip. Why go far – even in the kitchen there are several knives: a large chef’s knife, a thin and flexible sirloin knife, a small vegetable knife, a “saw” for bread

The thicker the blade, the more rough work it is suitable, up to performing the functions of an ax or a shovel. A thin blade makes it easier to cut food into transparent slices. Hard steel retains its cutting properties for a long time, but for its sharpening, you will have to carry the knife to the workshop.

“Carbon” has a very pleasant cut, but for such a blade not to rust, it will require more care. The wooden handle is “warmer” than rubber plastic and more pleasant to the touch, but it can absorb a lot of unpleasant odors and absorb moisture. Electron, like other synthetic materials, lies confidently in the hand and absorbs recoil in the palm of your hand when chopping.

Choosing the “best” is always a compromise between quality, speed, comfort, reliability, beauty, and price. And buying a knife that is not very suitable for your tasks will eventually send it to the shelf. Therefore, before purchasing, be sure to figure out how and where your knife will work.

For hunting and fishing

A decent hunting knife is capable of effectively slaughtering an animal and butchering a carcass. Since you have to deal with cutting bones, the sharpening angle of the blade is usually quite large (up to 45 degrees), and the design is well suited for stabbing.

Most often, either a full-fledged dagger or a knife with a blade. With a butt decreasing to the tip acts as the main hunting weapon. It should not be unnecessarily long and heavy (this will be inconvenient to use), and the cutting edge should have a margin of safety, or it can be easily corrected in field conditions.

The blade is strong and resilient so as not to break, made of fairly hard steel, 4-5 mm thick.

The handle of a hunting knife is preferably made of plastic or treated wood – so that it does not absorb blood, water and is easy to wash, and the grip is reliable even with gloves and in the cold.

An important point is the choice of the scabbard. They must securely hold the knife in pursuit of prey (with the ability to quickly get it), be firmly attached to hunting ammunition. And ensure the safety of the owner when worn.

This is primarily a full-fledged hand tool that must withstand all loads. Strong, comfortable, reliable, safe to use, and at an adequate price. As a hunter, you will use it and load it regularly, so be smart when looking for a quality-price combination.

A hunting knife almost always falls into the category of edged weapons (on the territory of the Russian Federation), since the “stabbing” purpose and the presence of a guard or sub-finger stop automatically send it to the “cold man”.

As in the proverb “one paratrooper can do a lot, but two can do everything,” a real hunter also has at least two knives. Such a set allows you to perform almost all the necessary work. This is still a Scandinavian classic – a large and strong “like” + a convenient and compact “puukko” has been proven for several centuries.

The fisherman’s knife will clean the fish from scales, without damaging the fillet; it should be convenient for them to carefully rip open the belly of the fish so as not to hurt the bubble. Its dimensions are compact enough to work with fishing lines. Cut reeds, cut pegs and slingshots, and perform other small work. The handle is tenacious and not slippery, the sheath does not get wet – it tightly holds the knife inside. While at the same time allowing you to get the tool with one hand, the blade is resistant to corrosion.

We recommend the following knives:
