What is an electric ball valve?

electric ball valves are ball valves that are operated by electric actuators. Actuators used in electric ball valves are called electric actuators, as their name implies. Electrical energy is used to power this actuator. The ball valve in this type employs a hollow ball that, when turned 90o, helps to block or open fluid flow. For on/off fluid flow applications, electric ball valves are used. When the ball hole becomes parallel to the direction of fluid flow, electric ball valves initiate fluid flow. When used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, electric ball valves are known for their reliability and long service life. Valve manufacturers design electric actuated ball valves to resist corrosion, high pressure, and high temperatures. We are the leading motorized ball valve manufacturer in India.

Components of electric ball valves

Valve body

In an electric ball valve, this component contains all of the valve’s internal parts. Considering the intended application, the valve body is designed to be very strong.

Bonnet

In an electric-actuated ball valve, the bonnet is placed above the valve body to help protect internal components and enhance tight seals. The bonnet of an electric ball valve is made of the same material as the valve body to ensure high strength without breaking either the valve body or the bonnet.

Stem

Among the components of the electric ball valve, the stem is connected to the actuator at its top and the ball is connected to its bottom. Electric ball valves operate by transmitting force from the actuator to the ball through the stem.

Ball

Electric ball valves have an internal component called a ball, which has a hole in the center through which fluid flows. By connecting the ball to the stem, the ball can rotate when the stem rotates.

Seats

There is a disc positioned between the valve body and the ball called a seat. Ball valve seats provide a seal between the body and the ball, as well as support the ball.

How does the electric ball valve work?

The electric ball valve consists of a ball with a hole in the center. When the valve closes and when it opens, the hole on the ball determines when the valve closes. The ball of the electric ball valve is connected to the stem. An electric actuator connects the stem to the actuator. Electric actuated ball valves work as follows:

The electric actuator rotates the stem 90 degrees. In addition to turning the stem, the ball also rotates. The valve opens when the hole in the ballpoints in the same direction as the fluid flow.

To stop fluid flow, the actuator rotates anticlockwise 90 degrees, which simultaneously rotates the stem, causing the ball to turn counterclockwise 90 degrees. Ball valves with electric actuation are used to control fluid flow on and off. Using the electric actuated ball valve for throttling under high pressure can easily damage the seats.

Types of electric ball valves

Two-way electric ball valve

An actuated ball valve has two ports: an inlet port and an outlet port. The ball hole in this electric ball valve allows fluid to flow from the inlet port to the outlet port. Electric ball valves of this type are used to control the flow of fluid on and off. Thus, this valve is also known as an electrically actuated shut-off ball valve.

Three-way electric ball valve

Powered by electricity, this ball valve has three ports. During the design of this electric ball valve, T or L formations use. Because this electrically actuated ball valve can manipulate flow directions, it can enhance a wide range of valve circuit functions. Consequently, three-way electric actuates ball valves use for fluid distribution and fluid diversion. In an electric three-way ball valve, any of the three ports can serve as an outlet or inlet.

One-piece electric ball valve

By using this type of electric ball valve, the chances of leakage reduc. Compar to other electric ball valves, one-piece electric ball valves are less expensive. In the event of damage to the one-piece body, it cannot disassemble for cleaning or repair work. Due to this, one-piece weld electric ball valves can only use in applications where particle build-up is difficult and sanitation is the main concern. It is easy to clean and repair one-piece electric ball valves connect screws. Their disassembly, however, requires special tools.

Two-piece electric ball valve

There are two pieces connecting this electric-actuate ball valve. The ball valve and connection to the other side contain one piece of this electric ball valve. It also has a connection to the other side of the electric ball valve and uses to hold internal parts together. The most common type of electric ball valve is a two-piece electric actuate ball valve. In electric ball valves, you can disassemble the two pieces for inspections, cleaning, maintenance, and repairs. To perform such maintenance practices, most connections are, bolt or screw.

Three-piece electric ball valve

Using bolts and nuts, the two ends of this electric-actua ball valve connect together by housing for internal valve components. In addition, the main pipe thread or weld to the other ends. These electric ball valves use where valves frequently use, requiring frequent maintenance. Therefore, three-way electric ball valves prefer because they can easily clean and service. In three-way electric actuate ball valves, the seals and seats are easily replac removing the valve body without disturbing the other two ends.

Top entry electric ball valve

The top entry electric actual ball valve is design so that its internal components can easily access removing the bonnet. As a result, electric top entry ball valves can disassemble, inspect, clean, and repair in line without having to remove the ball from the pipe during maintenance.

Trunnion electric ball valve

There is an extra shaft at the bottom of this electric ball valve, which supports the ball. Ball valves with trunnions mounted on them are load with springs at the seats. A tight seal creates the springs to attach to the ball held by the trunnion when the fluid flow activates the springs. Electric trunnion ball valves work efficiently in different pressure ranges and can handle high pressures.

Applications of electric ball valve

  • Food and beverage processing uses electric ball valves.
  • Pharmaceutical industries use electric-actuated ball valves.
  • In irrigation systems and water treatment systems, electric-actuate ball valves use.
  • In the oil and gas industry, they use.
  • In dishwashers and washing machines, electric ball valves use.
  • Heat exchangers use these valves.
  • Various manufacturing industries use these valves, including the chemical, steel, and plastic industries.

Advantages of electric ball valves

  • It is possible to automate or semi-automate electric ball valves based on the user’s preference.
  • It is easy to clean, dismantle, and repair electric actuated ball valves.
  • Compared to other valves such as gate valves, electric ball valves have a small volume and weight.
  • The simple design of electric ball valves reduces their cost.
  • Ball valves powered by electricity operate quickly.
  • Electrified ball valves use in high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
  • Joints seal tightly with these valves.
  • Compared to other types of valves, electric ball valves have a low-pressure drop and a high fluid flow rate.
  • In fluid flow control, electric ball valves are efficient since they do not require lubrication and have a tight seal.
  • Compared to other valves in this category, these are affordable.
  • It is versatile to use electric ball valves in different industries because they can use for a wide range of applications.

Disadvantages of electric ball valves

  • Throttling applications should not perform with electric ball valves.
  • Ball valves actuated by electric motors close and open rapidly, causing overpressure and hammering.
  • When used incorrectly, electric-actuated ball valves experience high wear and tear.

Troubleshooting electric ball valves

Leakage at the connection threads/bolts/screws

  • Threads that are not properly thread. The threads, bolts, and screws on the electric ball valve should be the correct size.
  • Insufficient or improper thread sealant. The thread connection should reinstall according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • The third joint was overtightening, causing the connector to split. To prevent damage from occurring again, replace the end connector and apply the correct torque.

Leakage at the union nuts

  • There is a misaligned end connector on the electric ball valve. Make sure the end connectors align correctly.
  • There is debris in the groove of the O-ring. Ensure that the O-ring is not damage by chemicals or physical forces. O-rings that damage should replace. Remove any particles from the groove.
  • Union nuts need to loosen. Union nuts should tighten.

Leakage at the electric ball valve stem

  • The stem O-ring damage. Check the O-ring compatibility with the media and for physical or chemical damage. The O-ring needs to replac.

Internal leakage

  • An obstruction to the ball. Make sure no solid particles are blocking the ball and clean it.
  • Electric ball valve end connectors should remove and the stem should inspect.

Electric actuator not working

  • The capacitor does not connect properly or is loose. Check the manufacturer’s wiring diagram and correct the connection accordingly.
  • Terminal block wires are loose or disconnected. Check the wires and re-connect accordingly.
  • Switch, wires or other leads disconnect or loose. Inspect these components and reconnect accordingly.
  • The motor damage or not operable. Check motor voltage as recommended by the manufacturer. Replace the motor if necessary.

The electric actuator rotates in one direction only

  • Some wires lost or disconnect from terminal blocks. Make sure the wires are correct and correct them if necessary.
