Things to Do in North America

A lifetime travel experience in fabulous North America awaits you. Choose from charming Canada, the mighty United States, or charming Mexico. Or combine them all into one extraordinary celebration.

With its cosmopolitan city centers, stunning mountain scenery, wide prairies, and stunning wildlife, Canada is an incredible destination. Australians feel right at home here and no matter where you choose to roam the ten million square kilometers that make up the world’s second-largest country, you’ll feel more than expected.

The west of Canada has long been a favorite destination for Australian travelers, and combining road or rail travel across the Rocky Mountains with an Alaskan cruise is a popular vacation choice. The rocks include snow-capped peaks, blue-green glaciers, endless coniferous forests, historic pioneer cities, and the rich cultural heritage of the First Nations. A train ride through the region to Rocky Mountaineer is an absolute must.

While in the west, take some time to explore Vancouver, famous for its cultural environment, food, and shopping. Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, offers many historic attractions on the spectacular island of Vancouver.

Head east to the charming French-speaking cities of Quebec and Montreal. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the old city centers and sample traditional Quebec cuisine, such as game pie. Poutine (french fries, sauce, and cheese curd) is an unofficial Canadian national dish found on every menu! Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the charming capital of Ottawa or the cultural and economic power of Toronto, the gateway to the fabulous Niagara Falls.

The US has just as much to offer visitors

It’s an opportunity to visit some of the world’s largest cities, including New York, Washington, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Enjoy the world’s most amazing theme parks in Orlando, Anaheim, and San Diego, or visit the theme capital Las Vegas. Traveling through lunch is an extraordinary experience. Southern cities such as Atlanta, Charleston, and Savannah are steeped in history, and the musical heritage of Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans is second to none.

Allow plenty of time to immerse yourself in some of the country’s stunningly beautiful natural landscapes, including the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, and the Rocky Mountains (which cross Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming).

Mexico offers a North American cultural experience like no other, and it’s so easy to do when combined with a vacation in the U.S. Taste the cosmopolitan culture and extraordinary cuisine of Mexico’s vast metropolis. Explore ancient Mayan civilization in fabulous places like Chichen Itza or Teotihuacan and enjoy some of the world’s best beaches in resort resorts such as Cancun, Tulum, Cozumel, and Cabo San Lucas.

2. The Australian Government’s Smart Traveler website has travel tips for your chosen destination.

3. North America is a vast continent with huge climatic differences between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Carefully check the average temperature of your travel dates and pack accordingly.

4. When booking point-to-point airline tickets in the U.S. and Canada, keep in mind that only a few airlines (including all services) include checked baggage in the ticket price. Pre-order checked baggage when purchasing a ticket. It’s much cheaper than paying at the airport. Keep in mind that U.S. airlines take it for granted that tickets are overbooked. Always check in early to avoid the possibility that your flight will knock you down.

5. Tipping is expected in the US, especially in service sectors such as hospitality, where it accounts for a large share of workers’ income. The amount can be between 10 and 20% of the price of your meal. Groups of six or more eaters can attract an automatic service charge of up to 20%. Canadian restaurants and bars generally do not include government sales tax and service charges. Don’t retreat. The final bill may be significantly higher than expected.

6. Food hygiene standards in the US and Canada are excellent but maybe less in Mexico. Use only tightly closed bottles and always choose freshly prepared food. Avoid fresh salads and vegetables that may have been washed in contaminated water. Avoid ice altogether unless you are absolutely sure it is made of purified water. Maintain a high level of personal hygiene and pack a comprehensive first aid kit.

7. The peak season in North America is usually the summer months of July and August. The spring and fall seasons can be a good time to travel, especially to Canada, where hotel prices are lower and major tourist centers are less crowded. Spring is also a time to see newborns in the wild, such as bear cubs in the Rocky Mountains of Canada. Winter is a great time to visit many North American cities, but in most cases be prepared for sub-zero temperatures.

8. When visiting cities like New York, which offer a lot of tourist activities, consider the New York Pass or its equivalent. This will save you money, especially if you stay three days or more. Accommodation in major tourist centers such as New York and Chicago can be very expensive and very small! Try booking outside the main centers, but with easy access to public transport. Free Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, bars, and restaurants in the United States and Canada.

9. Be cautious but don’t go crazy when traveling in North America. Always be aware of your surroundings and your personal safety. Use especially caution in remote areas and large cities in Mexico. It is unwise to use public transport at night. Keep your valuables hidden. If something seems wrong, it probably is. Trust your intuition!
