Complete Over view Of Duplex Blinds

What are Duplex Blinds?

Duplex blinds are also known as two-way or reversible window coverings. They typically come in softwood. MDF or aluminium extrusions and these materials will dictate the price of the items you purchase.

The doors either open outwards to reveal a solid fabric on both sides (double cell) or open outwards revealing one side. Having an opaque material (single cell). The latter is much more popular because it can help keep rooms cool during the summer months. It’s very rare to find single cells with double cells being the norm. However, there are some exceptions where suitable styles are available for both types.

Sizes can vary but they tend to be between 30mm and 55mm thick (excluding headbox). With the most popular being 50mm.

The two-way function is achieved by using different fabrics for each side of the blind. Duplex blinds are made up of three elements: Headbox, Stiles and Brake/Lift cord mechanism

Duplex blinds have a headbox just like any other Venetian or vertical blind. However, it’s much larger in size because of the additional width given to store more than one set of slats. A typical headbox will measure approximately 100mm x 100mm x 15 – 25mm. Depending on the style chosen but can vary depending on the manufacturer used.

Slat widths or lift cords are also wider to accommodate two separates sets of slats per window rather than one. Giving them that two-way reversible function. An average slat width is 55mm and may vary slightly depending on the style chosen such as the Panama, espagnolette or pencil pleat.

Slats come in two different materials:

Alloy and Fibreglass (cellular) with cellular being the more popular choice because of their ability to insulate against heat and cold and also provide privacy and light control (from translucent/semi-transparent up to solid). Cellular blinds are typically available in 5% UV, 10% UV, 15% UV & 25% UV. But this will depend on your preference as to which level you would like.

The brake mechanism comes in a variety of designs (buttons, discs or cranks) and is operated by the lift cord (looped on one end). The brake will hold open the window when it’s in a raised position.

Best For Windows

Duplex blinds work best on windows that are relatively wide and deep such as sliding patio doors or double-hung style made from aluminium or timber. They can also be used on the skylight, roof lantern and fanlight applications but again only if made from aluminium extrusions. Whilst this product can be fitted into some aluminium powder-coated profiles. There may be limitations depending on the manufacturer of the profile used which could affect the alignment of blinds between glass panels.

Wherever possible we would always recommend using wooden Venetian styles because they can provide maximum tilt and turn functionality allowing them to be opened fully and remain open without being restricted by the cord mechanism. The only exception to this would be where double cell duplex blinds are required to stop heat from entering a room. If privacy is needed from other buildings/residents etc.

10 Benefits of Duplex Blinds

1. Two-Way Functionality

The main benefit of this product is that it can be operated in two different ways to suit your requirements. These include heating & cooling properties and light control. This function makes them very popular for room positioning because they can maximise natural lighting without compromising on thermal insulation.

2. Cellular Design

Cellular blinds are often referred to as thermally efficient because of their ability to insulate against heat and cold. Thus providing the homeowner with improved comfort levels by reducing extraneous noise (i.e wind, rain etc) entering via the window. They also cut out around 99% of harmful UV rays which can cause damage to fabric or furnishings over time. If left unprotected therefore extending the life expectancy of the product/its contents.

3. Privacy & Light Control

They also provide privacy and light control because of their ability to be translucent. Semi-transparent and opaque depending on the UV coating used. This is great news for those homes where overlooking can cause a problem or unwanted attention from neighbours.

4. Durable Construction

Being cellular they are made from fabric that is sandwiched between two thick sheets of aluminium. Which helps them retain their shape as well as providing enhanced durability and strength over time as you use them. As opposed to conventional blinds that will warp if not hung correctly or exposed to extreme weather conditions/heat/cold etc

5. Cleaner Lines

Their internal design does not have any exposed lift cords hanging down like traditional blinds. So they appear neater and cleaner in appearance. This is another reason why they are popular for living areas in particular.

6. Screens & Security

On the subject of security, you can use these products to provide a high level of protection against intruders. Because their cellular construction makes it difficult to gain access through glass panels due to lack of exposed lift cords. But also because the cells themselves give added strength and resilience. If somebody attempts to gain entry by kicking or hitting them etc with force (they will flex instead of shattering).

7. Keeps Out Insects

The same logic applies when considering insects such as bees. Wasps and flies because there is an absence of holes/pockets within the cells through which pests like to gain entry. This means that they are much easier to keep clean because dust etc can’t get trapped within the blinds. As it does on traditional styles where the lift cords are exposed.

8. Customisation

A customised approach is also possible when using this product because of the different colours/fabrics. Can be used on either side of the glass panels which provides you with even more control over light and privacy. And, if you feel creative enough there is always the option for bespoke designs made to measure by suppliers. Such as Curtains Express. So maybe your current curtains could do with a run-out?

9. Different Sizes & Shapes

You can buy these types of blinds in all shapes and sizes so whether you require bay windows. Straight-lined or circular shapes are all available to suit your needs and requirements.

10. Easy To Clean

One final point about their design is that because these blinds do not have the lift cords hanging down. They are also easier to clean because there is nothing for dust. Debris etc to get caught up in so a simple wipe with a damp cloth. And cleaner will suffice for most homes. They can even be washed on occasion. Especially if you have pets that roam around outside often as mud/grass can end up on them from time to time.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, two-way reversible fabric blinds offer increased light control but also heating & cooling properties because of their cellular design. Again, whatever type you choose it’s important to make a well-informed decision. This will determine how functional they are in your home environment over a period of time. Not forgetting aesthetics too!
