How to replace electric water heater elements?

One of the most common water heater problems is leaking water. To fix this, you’ll need to replace the water heater. It is best to hire professionals for water heater replacement service.

How to replace electric water heater elements?

1) Turn off the breaker for your water heater. Drain water from your water tank by turning off the valve towards the bottom of your water heater. Place a pan beneath the valve to collect water. The water level should be below the water heater elements.

2) Unscrew water heater elements from the water tank using adjustable pliers. If you’re not sure which one is positive and negative, look for water that comes out of your water heater element. One side will have water coming out of it, and the other side will have water going into it.

3) Pull water heater elements from the water tank. You should be able to pull them straight up. Set water heater elements to the side for later use.

4) Take your water tank lid off using a screwdriver or wrench. If you can’t find the water tank lid, you can buy a water heater element by itself.

5) Clean out the water tank using a water hose and make sure water is completely drained. You may need to replace water heater elements if there’s too much rust or sediment buildup on them over time.

6) Place new water heater elements in the water tank. You should be able to replace water heater elements the same way you took water heater elements out of a water tank, so just repeat steps 1-3.

7) Put the water tank lid back on using a screwdriver or wrench. Make sure the water tank lid is secure so you don’t risk leaking water or steam when your water heater heats water again.

8) Test the water heating system by turning on the hot water tap and waiting for the water to heat up, then test the water’s temperature before using it.

Types of water heaters

Water heater repair should only take a few hours if you’re replacing water heater elements yourself. But keep in mind that this can be a dangerous process if water is still in the water heater tank. So always make sure water heater elements are completely dry to prevent electrocution or fire risk.

There are also other water heating options that work just as well and don’t require water heater repair:

– Tankless Water Heaters: These heat water while it goes through pipes, and water is only heated as it’s needed, so water won’t be sitting in the water heater tank and rusting water heater elements.

– Heat Pump Water Heaters: These use electricity to heat water, but they’re more efficient than gas or electric water heaters because they don’t waste energy heating water that isn’t being used inside of the water heater tank.

– Solar Water Heaters: These water heaters rely on sunlight to heat water, and can save hundreds of dollars each year in water heating costs if you live in a sunny area where water will be heated by the sun for most hours of the day.
