A lot has been written about the importance of Quran memorization and how to achieve the milestone fast. You can find all that has been written helpful. I am also going to add to this treasure which might give you some new ideas and help you approach your online Quran memorization in a better way.
I have been teaching online Quran memorization course since 2007 and have helped students from many countries and backgrounds memorize Quran online. During my almost 4 years of service, I have noted down certain things that affect your online Quran memorization journey in terms of speed, accuracy, and efficiency. For the benefit of those who are already memorizing the Quran online or aspire to do so, I would like to share them here and offer some tips. I hope you find them useful.
- Don’t start memorization straightaway
By this, I mean that you should start memorization only when you have perfected your Quran recitation. If you struggle with Quran reading or have Tajweed mistakes, first work on it. Not only will you never be a good Hafiz if your recitation is not good but also it will be very hard to do the memorization. Memorization is the 2nd stage. The 1st stage is learning to read the Quran with Tajweed.
2. Set a daily goal
Online Quran memorization is an uphill task. It requires daily practice and goals. If you take it easy and practice when you feel like it, it will take way too long. You may also end up quitting. For faster Quran memorization, it’s important that you set daily achievable goals and don’t end your day until you achieve them. For example, if you have set a goal of 5 Ayahs of daily memorization, make sure you do it every day no matter what.
Remember, set a goal that you can easily get based upon your memorization capability and the time you are able to dedicate.
3. Focus is the key
Memorization is all about focus and concentration. The more focused you are, the less time it will take. Less is more if there is focus. Get yourself an isolated place with no distractions. Don’t even look here and there when you are memorizing your lesson. Close your eyes and don’t think about anything else other than the Quran page or the Ayahs that you recite.
4. Get a buddy
Memorization is more effective when you recite it to someone. Have your friend or family member listen to when you have memorized. You will make 3 times more mistakes when you will read to someone else than when you read to yourself. The more pressure you feel, the more mistakes will you make and the more effective and concrete your memorization will become. You can only be complacent about your memorization when approved by someone else.
5. Revise your previous lessons
Quran memorization is easy but maintaining it is difficult. There are so many people who memorized the Quran but forgot it after a few years. This is because they don’t revise it.
It’s extremely important both during and after Quran memorization that you revise some parts of the Quran on a daily basis. If you are a Hafiz, it’s recommended that you recite 1 juzz daily completing the Quran in a month. If you don’t get the time to recite 1 complete Juzz then recite at least half or a quarter of a Juzz. The key is daily recitation. It won’t take long before you forget everything if you don’t practice.
If you are in the middle of an online Hifz program, make sure you recite some part of the already memorized Juzz to your tutor every 2nd week. This is apart from reciting your previous lesson which should be done in every next class. You should not proceed to your new lesson unless you are perfect with the old one.
The above tips have helped my online Quran Hifz students a great deal and I am sure they will help you too if you apply them the right way.
